Towards the end of autumn I saw hundreds of stink bugs on buildings. I imagine they were trying to get in before the onset of winter.
I saw hundreds again on the ground below. Dead. All those that didn't make it. Is it always like this? Do they always do this? I never noticed before. But, I've only recently become more aware of nature. I was wondering if the hell that was this summer had made for conditions that caused their numbers to explode.
Last week I saw this one on a window inside where I work. He was in the same spot everyday. Never seemed to move. Definitely alive. To me it seemed as if he was pining to be back outside. I thought of what he must have had to do to get inside. He had survived, made it through, while so many were outside dead. But, now I wondered what he was thinking. Did he regret responding to his natural survival instincts? Would he have rather died outside where he belonged? Maybe he just needed time to adjust to his new surroundings. I was thinking way too much about it.
Then Friday I watched someone squish him.
And that was that
