There's only two things in existence that make me openly weep no matter my state of mind.
The first is the ending of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men "
The second is Jackson Heights own Randy (You may know him as Joe the policeman on the "What's goin' down" episode of That's My Mama) Watson's performance of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" from "Coming to America."
Randy and the incomparable Sexual Chocolate take the song to a whole nother level. They deliver an authenticity, and emotional highs (I mean no disrespect) that the late Whitney Houston could only of dreamed of.
Side Note*
When I was a kid And "Coming to America" had just come out, the kids used to tease me because Prince Akeem works at McDowell's (thinly veiled McDonald's) restaurant. My father was the chef of a restaurant a block away from the school and all the kids knew. So I got a lot of, "Is your Dad the chef of McDowell's?" etc...Never bothered me at all though because I loved and love that movie. At one point I had the McDowell's golden arcs logo T-shirt when I was older and I wore it with pride.
I guess the question though is...how had a bunch of 9 year olds seen "Coming to America"? I don't think that would fly today. But it was a different time...the 80's.
Better?
Worse?
I don't know...
No school shootings that I can recall back then.
That's something, right?
